Amista 2017 Syrah

Amista 2017 Syrah

Syrah is our flagship varietal and this vintage showcases the reason we selected it for our vineyard site.  The aromas are complex with plum, wild blackberries, burnt caramel with a touch of tobacco and wet stone. The palate reflects flavors of cardamom, cassis, black fruit with a long-lasting black pepper finish.

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Our Syrah here in Dry Creek Valley tends to showcase each vintage so succinctly, it always tends to be my benchmark of how a year turned out, flavor wise. This Syrah shows all of the big bold fruit of a warmer vintage: black cherry and ripe raspberry coulis on the nose plus warm baking spices give way to a rich palate with plenty of lush tannins and a big helping of jammy fruit and a continuation of lilting spice and black pepper notes.
Production Notes
The Morningsong Vineyard Syrah was harvested first thing in the morning by hand. The grapes were sorted both in the vineyard and in the winery before being destemmed and left whole berry and put into an open top tank. The grapes were cold soaked for 5 days to extract the maximum amount of flavor, then inoculated and fermented on the skins for 12 days. After being gently pressed off the skins, the wine was moved to 25% new French oak and the remainder to neutral oak barrels where it completed malolactic fermentation. It was racked once in the 15 months before being bottled.
Winemaker Notes
2017 was a dry and warm vintage in Dry Creek Valley and in vintages like this, we are reminded how lucky we are in our proximity to the creek itself and to have our own little microclimate in the valley. Foggy mornings that we typically have were not present this vintage, but our Syrah has a great canopy of foliage which gave lots of protection to the grapes and allowed for a slow and even ripening.
